KPM Berlin Art Nouveau Vase and Cover with Rare Decoration, c.1918

The ribbon detail decoration with an unusual and rare technique of tortoiseshell-effect underglaze enamels, fired then overglazed with a thick grey enamel which fissures in a subsequent firing to reveal some of the tortoiseshell enamel beneath. Painted in iron-red with cartouches of putti playing a cello and violin to the front, and a bouquet of Deutsche Blumen to the reverse, reserved on a deep turquoise ground with cobalt blue rims, and heightened with delicate gilt scrollwork throughout. Underglaze blue sceptre, overglaze red printed orb, black painted 8779, iron-red decorator's ciphers z.[ and impressed year code S to the base of the vase, the inside cover with black painted 8779 and gilt 54, circa 1918.
