Meissen plates with in-glaze decoration

probably by Rudolf Hentschel — circa 1905
£850 each

From the Art Nouveau period with winter snow scenes at sunrise and at sunset. The colours here were achieved using an ‘in-glaze’ technique that required high temperature enamels (‘Scharffeuerfarben’, developed at the end of the nineteenth century) and the glaze to be applied in the same firing. These colours were fired at up to 1200C causing the enamels to fuse into the glaze to create the soft, rich effects that are their distinctive feature.

Dimensions
26.5cm and 26.8cm diameter
