Meissen pâte-sur-pâte plate

probably by Rudolf Hentschel — circa 1905
£2300

With two dragonflies meeting inside a garland of apple blossom. Rare for both the use of multi-coloured pâte-sur-pâte (paste on paste) and for the non-uniform cut out to the border.

It is probably by Rudolf Hentschel who operated at the manufactory largely in the Art Nouveau period, which is when this piece was designed and created.

The requirement of multiple firings for this complex technique is demonstrated by a factory-repaired kiln flaw visible on the rim between 3 & 4 o’clock, and giving rise to the two strikes through the factory mark.
